Dalia Peña is the head of customer experience at Drishti. Dalia brings extensive experience and a keen understanding of lean manufacturing principles to Drishti. She has been able to infuse that background into the company, particularly to members of Drishti who bring less manufacturing expertise to the table. In doing so, Dalia has ensured that Drishti’s AI-powered computer vision technology stays hyper-focused on meeting the needs of discrete manufacturers across North America. Dalia was one of Drishti’s first employees, and at the time, one of the only employees with actual assembly line experience.
Recently, I was chatting with one of our continuous improvement advisers, and he shared a great story from a customer. In it, the Drishti Rewind feature helped improve the safety of the line associates by quickly identifying a safety risk. Here’s the synopsis:
As he does every day, Rob was reviewing assembly line footage from earlier in the day to get a sense of how productivity was on the floor when he spotted a line associate squeezing between two cobots on the line. The line associate was thin enough to squeeze past the safety light curtain and, as a result, was in physical danger.
This action wouldn’t have been caught if not for Drishti Rewind. There was no catalyst to review the station from a safety perspective, and it was only because Rob was taking a look at what had happened on the floor from a production standpoint that he saw the risky situation happen.
Without Drishti Rewind, the only catalyst to review safety at the station quite possibly would have been an injury to the line associate, or even death.
Within an hour of viewing the video footage provided by Drishti, Rob had installed a physical barrier at that station to prevent another instance. He also shared with the line associates what had happened, and reiterated the company’s safety guidelines as they pertain to cobots.
Though not currently an official component of Drishti’s product suite, this isn’t the first time a customer has identified a serious safety risk serendipitously, just by reviewing Drishti video for other purposes.
A few months ago, a line associate was injured when a unit came into the station while her arm was still over the line. Thankfully, she wasn’t seriously hurt, but the review of the video showed that she had been performing standardized work.
What standardized work hadn’t taken into account was the position of her chair. When Drishti showed that the positioning mattered, the team quickly updated the standardized work instructions to protect the seated line associate at that station.
We’re always thrilled when our customers find new ways to get value from Drishti, and with employee safety everyone’s number one priority, these discoveries help make manual assembly tasks more satisfying and secure for everyone.
